What's the difference between residential general contractors and home improvement contractors?

If you hire the same company to remodel your entire kitchen or add an addition onto your home, then that company can be considered your residential general contractor. They will be sub contracting out certain aspects of the job to be completed like the plumbing, electrical work, and drywall. Because they are hiring and coordinating specialty contractors they are acting as a general contractor for you.
